Motherhood

We mothers belong to a special club, and mothers who have had to bury a child are an even more exclusive club. It isn’t a club you would want anyone to have to know about, much less belong, but as we all learn through life, such is not our decision to make.

Got word last week about a poker playing friend, Karina Jett, who found her four year old son floating in their home pool on a Friday night. They had to pull the plug on Tuesday, such an awful, terrible, senseless tragedy.

Yesterday in the airport in Philly, headed back to Las Vegas, I struck up a conversation with a woman who lost her son three years ago. We were instantly linked in a sisterhood that only we can understand. She asked how old Hayden was. I said with tears in my eyes, “14”. She said “my son was 28. I had twice as long but it wasn’t enough.” What a profound statement that is. There’s never enough time with those you birth and nurture and love, truly love.
